What is an internet domain?
An internet domain is a name used as an address on the internet. For example: keylinedesign.co.za is the Keyline internet domain. Most domain owners typically identify their website by adding www. to the front of their domain name. The www is a host (server) name. The last part of the name, .co.za , identifies the domain as a commercial (.co) domain in South Africa (.za). Names with the .com extension are considered to be international commercial domains.
Technically speaking, an internet domain translates an IP address (such as: 196.15.145.1) into a name that humans find much easier to understand and remember. That’s one of the best reasons for owning a domain in your company’s name; because it’s easy to remember.
Pricing:
The costs depend on what type of domain you want. To own a domain, you only have to register it (see below) . Once registered, domains typically require an annual renewal fee. Below are Keyline prices (incl. VAT) associated with domain ownership by type of domain.
| .co.za | R 150.00 |
| .com | R 200.00 |
| .co | R 300.00 |
| .net | R 240.00 |
| .org | R 200.00 |
Once you’ve registered a domain, then you need someplace to host it. Whether you plan to use your domain for a website and/or email, you’ll need an ISP to host it for you.
